At the end of the novel the dramatic irony is folded over, becomes part of the character's own assessment of himself. He researches his own condition and discovers that he will regress, incurably; he writes a paper on his condition at the peak of his powers, then finds himself unable to understand it, in an agony the whole way.

The main conflict in "Flowers for Algernon" is the internal struggle faced by the protagonist, Charlie Gordon, as he grapples with his increasing intelligence and the impact it has on his relationships, self-perception, and understanding of the world around him. This conflict is heightened by the ethical implications of the experimental surgery that has both enhanced and destabilized his cognitive abilities.
