Watts measure power flow. To find the cost you must find the amount of energy, so to do that you multiply the watts by the time the power flows.

1 unit of electrical energy, which costs 5-25 p in the UK, is 1 kilowatt-hour, which is 1 kilowatt for 1 hour, or 1000 Watts for 1 hour, or 100 Watts for 10 hours, or 10 Watts for 100 hours.

In the USA, it's different everywhere, but figure 25¢ per kilowatt-hour.

You don't pay for 'watts'. The 'watt' is the rate or speed at which you use energy from the outlet, so the cost depends not only on how fast you use it, but also on how long you use it. Domestic electric rates change drastically depending on where you live, how much you use, and even what time of day you use it. But let's take for an example, 25¢ per kilowatt hour (KWH). That means that if you're drawing energy from the outlet at the rate of 1,000 watts, you'll owe the electric company a quarter if you keep it up for an hour. Your question specified a megawatt = 1 million watts = 1,000 kilowatts. At the same cost of a quarter per KWH, your megawatt would cost: -- About $4.16 for 1 minute. -- About $125 for 1/2 hour. -- About $6,000 for a whole 24-hour day.

"Watt" is a 'speed'. It's used to measure how fast you're using energy.

You don't pay for watts.

You pay for how much energy you use. That's the 'watts' multiplied by

how much time you keep it up. You could take energy at the speed of

a million watts (if your electric meter and house wiring could stand it),

but if you only kept doing that for a couple of seconds, it would cost less

than baking a turkey in your electric stove.

Prices for electrical energy are different everywhere. A rough number

that you can use to get an idea of the cost is

1,000 watts for 1 hour

500 watts for 2 hours

250 watts for 4 hours

200 watts for 5 hours

100 watts for 10 hours . . . . . 1 'kilowatt-hour' . . . . . 25¢

Is electricity cost a controllable cost?

Electricity cost not a controllable cost. The manager cannot influence this type of expense. To the extent where a cost cannot be managed it is indeed a non controllable, now for electricity, to the extent where consumption can be raised or lowered it becomes a controllable cost. If the consumption can be optimized through processes or equipments it then is a controllable cost.
