In the futuristic society of The Giver, the people do not possess many customs. The government strictly controls the people, and severely punishes them for any mistakes or acts of dissidence. Citizens must strictly follow the rules governing rudeness and 'precision of language' and they must customarily apologize for any mistakes made. ( The citizens cloud the meaning of their words by using 'precision of language'. The author does not explain why they citizens do this, but in their community it is an excepted social norm.) The citizens celebrate ages 1-12 with special ceremonies where the children, along with the community recognizing their new age, receive new privileges. For example, at the ceremony of 9, children receive their own bicycle. At the most important ceremony, the ceremony of 12, children receive their assignment or job they will work in until the day they die. Finally, before the community 'releases' or euthanizes an elderly person, they hold a small ceremony of release where the elderly tells about their life.
