An action, person, place, word, or object can all have a symbolic meaning. ... Examples of Symbolism. When an author wants to suggest a certain mood or emotion, he can also use symbolism to hint at it, rather than just blatantly saying it.

A metaphor is very similar and also stands for something it isn't. Don't confuse the two. A metaphor makes a comparison for the sake of illustrating a point or describing a situation (ie, Bright Eyes' song lyrics: "This is the first day of my life/I swear I was born right in this doorway." He wasn't literally born on the doorstep today, but he's using this metaphor to describe the feeling of an awakening to a new life).

A symbol is carried through the work and consistently represents something that adds to the meaning of the piece. For instance, a character who constantly wears green may be interpreted as jealous; a deer symbolizes innocence while a lion symbolizes strength or freedom. Symbols are often universally understood (colors, animals), but don't have to be.
