Animal biotechnology is the application of scientific and engineering principles to the processing or production of materials by animals or aquatic species to provide goods and services (NRC 2003). Examples of animal biotechnology include generation of transgenic animals or transgenic fish (animals or fish with one or more genes introduced by human intervention), using gene knockout technology to generate animals in which a specific gene has been inactivated, production of nearly identical animals by somatic cell nuclear transfer (also referred to as clones), or production of infertile aquatic species.

What is the definition of biotechnology?

The definition of biotechnology varies, but a simple definition is the use of organisms by man. One example of biotechnology is cloning. We have been cloning plants for centuries. Each time a leaf is excised from a violet plant and placed in soil to grow a new plant, cloning has occurred. Today, we are not only doing the physical manipulation at the visual level but also on the molecular level. In modern or molecular biotechnology, we physically select the desired characteristic at the molecular level and add it to the organism's genetic makeup.

What are the branches of biotechnology?

The branches of biotechnology are: Red biotechnology-that is used for medical processes, like finding genetic cures by going through genomic manipulations and creating organisms to produce antibiotics.Green biotechnology- that is used in reference to agricultural processes that use biotechnology. Eg. The development of transgenic plants, need for pesticides remove etc.White biotechnology- This kind of biotechnology is used to reduce the costs for producing industrial goods that occur when traditional processes are used.Blue biotechnology- that deals with marine and aquatic usages of biotechnology,
