Differentiation is the process by which an algebraic expression for the slope of a line tangent to a curve at a given point is found.

For example, take a function, f(x) = 2x2 + 5.

The derivative of f(x), known as f'(x) is 4x.

f(2) is equal to 8, and f'(2) is also equal to eight.

This means that the slope of the line tangent to the point (2,8) on f(x) is 8.

Why in rolles theorem closed interval is used for contuinity and open interval is used for differentiability?

It requires that f(a)=f(b) where a and b are beginning and ending points. Also, it says there is a c between a and such that f'(c)=0. If f were not differentiable on the open interval, the statement f'(c)=0 would be invalid.
