Distillation is the process of physically separatinga mixture liquids based on each liquid having a different boiling point. Classically, this involves a mixture of an alcohol and water. Since the alcohol has a lower boiling point, you can heat the mixture to the boiling point of alcohol, which will boil off, leaving the water behind. The vapor of the alcohol is caught in tubing and cooled back to a liquid in a separate container.
