Without individuality, we don't have thinking too far outside the box because the group must decide on that type of thinking. Individuality allows an individual to think through a scenario without those dissenting voices being heard or considered until he/she has reached a conclusion. Change/progress comes much quicker in a group where individual thinking is allowed or encouraged. Although American by birth, I have lived outside of America and worked with multiple Nationalities for 28 years. To me, and I believe my beliefs are those of an unbiased and well schooled observer, it is this very point that separates American thought from the remainder of the world.

The word individualistic is characterized by individualism, independent, self-reliant behaviors, expressing individuality, being unconventional. It's often referred to as a style in persons, but it involves thinking, behaviors, actions, etc.

My fifth grade teacher's individualistic teaching style, full of common sense but that disregarded many unnecessary rules, made her stand out from all my other teachers. She had a strong sense of right and wrong, but believed it most important to teach us how to think for ourselves rather than blindly follow the crowd.
