The umbraUmbra comes from the Latin "shadow". It is the darkest part of a shadow. From within the umbra, the source of light is completely blocked by the object causing the shadow. This contrasts with the penumbra, where the light source is only partially blocked and there is only a partial shadow.

An umbra is latin for shadow, but we use it mainly in Astronomy to describe the shadow cast by a Heavenly body. You are most like to see an Umbra in a Total Eclipse as you will be standing in it.

The words are usually used in association with an Eclipse.

The word "Umbra" is latin for "Shadow" and usually refers to the darkest part of the shadow. If you are experiencing a total eclipse you are said to be in the Umbra.

The word "Penumbra" is Latin for "nearly shadow" so if you were experiencing a Partial Eclipse you would be in the Penumbra.
