What is the difference between Pokemon FireRed and leafgreen?
There are certain Pokemon (such as Magmortar and Electivire) exclusive to each game. Other than that, there is no difference.
You can't get either Magmortar Or Electivire in the games LG and FR. You mean Magmar and Electibuzz.
Pokemon Emerald takes place in the Hoenn region, whilst Pokemon Firered takes place in the Kanto region. Emerald was a third version of Ruby and Sapphire, when Firered and Leafgreen were remakes of the original Red and Blue. The most major difference is what Pokemon appear, the locations, and the trainers.

Is it possible to battle Pokemon between Soul Silver and Fire Red using a wireless adapter or cable on the top floor of the Pokemon center?
Crystal cannot trade to Leafgreen because for a couple reasons: One that the game is on a different console and is not compatible with the Gameboy Color, Two since the game had not came out when Crystal was released no program was created to trade between the newer games that would follow Crystal even if the newer games are remakes of the older ones such as Firered and Leafgreen.
That is a matter of personal opinion; gameplay-wise, the two games are completely identical. The only difference is that in each version, you'll find 23 different species that appear only in that version, of which 13 are in the Kanto Dex. Pokémon obtainable in FireRed and unobtainable in LeafGreen are the Ekans family, the Oddish family, the Psyduck family, the Growlithe family, the Shellder family, the Electabuzz family, the Scyther family, the Wooper family, Murkrow…
The first part of Pokemon LeafGreen and FireRed (before succsessfully defeating the Elite Four) you can the first 150 Pokemon. (Mew and Togepi are not included). The difference between the two, though, is in Leafgreen, you can get different Pokemon (like Sandshrew) and in FireRed you can only get certain Pokemon (like Growlithe). So, if you want all the Pokemon, you needd to train with a friend that has the opposite pair. The second part…

There are only 16 gyms in total, (8 in Johto, 8 in Kanto) so there is no 17th gym. *There used to be a gym on Cinnabar Island, until it was destroyed by the eruption of the Cinnaber Volcano-some time between Pokemon Red and Blue/Firered and Leafgreen and Pokemon Gold and Silver/Heartgold and Soulsilver.*
