What is the difference between a CD cd-r and CD-rw?

RW stands for ReWritable. With a CD-R you can't put anything on it more than once. You add songs to it once and that's it. It is how it is, you can't do anything else with it. You can reuse a CD-RW. Say I had a song on there, but it messed up. I can either find it in my computer and delete the song and then put the right one on it. Or i can add the right one along with the wrong one.

A CD-R (Compact Disc - Read) is designed to be written to one time and the data be stored permanently (in some cases, the data can be erased, but the CD becomes worthless).

A CD-RW (Compact Disc - Read/Write) can be erased and written to multiple times (much like the old cassette or VHS tapes. They can be erased and rewritten multiple times).

A CD-ROM is of couse a portable way of storing info. A CD-rw or CD- rewriteable is anothe way is storing portable info. The difference is small but completely changes the meanings of both. A rewritable disc can have the data erased and replaced by something else. Also CD-rw's ususally cost a little more. So if your using a CD to carry a PowerPoint presentation, you can use a CD-ROM, but if you are trying to keep a CD withe all the lastes hits and you only have on CD, use a CD-rw.
