The Specialist in Education degree, also called Education Specialist and typically abbreviated EdS, is a post-Masters terminal degree in the U.S. system of higher education. While it is post-Masters it is not a doctorate, instead it is at the same level as the Engineer degree or the Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies. While it is a terminal degree, it is not a doctorate, and while some doctoral programs may offer advanced standing to those who hold an EdS, it is not generally considered to be an intermediate step between the Master's and doctorate.
The EdS is especially popular with primary and secondary educators who work in systems that offer an additional increase in pay for those who earn thirty credits beyond the Master's degree, as it fulfills this without requiring a doctoral dissertation.
