Myths are widely believed stories that falsely explain some phenomena. Fables are stories told, usually with animals, that have a moral. Legends are fictional stories that are told within the context of history.

Fables are tales that are usually completely fictitious, that end with a moral or object lesson.

Myths are religious tales that either have a basis in fact (as in there probably was a city of Troy and a Perseus) or represent an allegory for some natural event (such as the tale of Apollo and Daphne, which represents the morning dew fleeing from the suns warmth).

Myth

Myths are ancient stories that are handed down through oral traditions that reflect a culture's belief's, religious beliefs and customs. Myths cover everything from "cosmic understanding" to unexplained phenomenon. As with legends, a myth will often greatly exaggerate the deeds of a person or the trouble a supernatural being is about to get into in order to better illustrate a specific point or lesson . Myths, like legends, are usually traditional stories of people, groups of people, places, events, supernatural beings, occurrences, etc. . Myths are not typically historically based.

Folklore

Folklore is regional and is the oral traditions of its people. Folklore consists of its groups' legends, songs, customs, superstitions, Fairy Tales, moral codes, dances, religious beliefs, cultural beliefs. Different groups have their own folklore; the Irish, the Scots, Native Americans, etc. The older the group, the richer is its folklore. Groups that are regionally close to each other, often have similar folklore traditions.

Legends

According to Wiki dictionary, "Legend" comes from the Latin adjective legenda, "for reading, to be read," which referred only to written stories, not to traditional stories transmitted orally. This strict definition was changed in the 1500's.

Only stories that were to be only ever read, not handed down orally, were called "Legends."

Legends are traditional stories that are widely accepted as historically based, though unverifiable so, based in truth that are sometimes exaggerated to illustrate the point or purpose. Legends are usually about a person or groups of people, events, places, and like folklore often involve the supernatural. Legends were used to "inspire and teach". Legends have an oral AND a written tradition.

While real legends have/ had some truth to their foundations, Urban Legends have none.

Urban legends:

Stories much more recent in origin that have very little if not absolutely no basis in truth. Told primarily for the purpose of thrills and entertainment. They are found all over news stands today in magazines that are popular specifically because there is no truth to them and they are usually quite outlandish.

A myth is a religious story that was once widely accepted as truthful. Myths usually a natural event, or geological feature, or set a moral example for people to follow or not follow). An example would be the story of Apollo and Daphne, or the tale of Midas' Golden Touch.

A fable is a story generally known to be fiction, that uses talking or anthropomorphized animals and objects to impart a moral or maxim. An example would be the Ant and the grasshopper, or Goldilocks.

A legend is tale set during a historic period that includes larger-than-life persons that may or may not be based in truth. A legend is usually used to promote an ideal among the people (usually that their group is superior in some way). Examples would be Paul Bunyan or Robin Hood.

A fable is like a fairytale, which always has a moral. A myth is similar, but it doesn't have a moral and is more non-fiction.
