An umbrella is usually used to guard someone from the rain. Whereas a parasol can be used for rain it is more often used to guard someone from the sun. Some parasols are not made with waterproof material and are usually made to be in a set location like a patio table or some other outdoor furnishing.
The beach umbrella was first used in Persia between 550 and 330 BC and this is also shown in many carvings found from the city of Persepolis. The beach umbrella can be also used as term parasol.
