A solution is a mixture of two or more substances in a single phase. At least two substances must be mixed in order to have a solution. The substance in the smallest amount and the one that dissolves or disperses is called the SOLUTE. The substance in the larger amount is called the SOLVENT. In most common instances water is the solvent. The gases, liquids, or solids dissolved in water are the solutes.

A heterogeneous mixture consists of visibly different substances or phases. The three phases or states of matter are gas, liquid, and solid.

Daniel Ong's Edit: Please not that although I do not know what the difference between a solution and a heterogeneous mixture is, the answer above is not entirely accurate. A solution can be a mix of two different states.

Anyways... This is what I believe to be the differene between a solution and a heterogeneous mixture.

To quote wikipedia "A solution is when a homogeneous mixture of one or more substances (the solutes) dissolved in another substance (the solvent)." Albeit simple, this is accurate.

Another quote from wikipedia... "Heterogeneous mixtures are mixtures with inconsistent, non-uniform composition."

Added Info:A Mixture can be separated by Mechanical means, such as a filter, strainer, etc. A Solution can only be separated by Chemical means.
A solution is a homogeneous mixture.

A solution is a homogeneous mixture (has the same uniform appearance and composition throughout).

A heterogeneous mixture consists of visibly different substances.

"homo" - same

"hetero" - different

A solution is a solid (the solvent) dissolved in a liquid (the solute). A heterogeneous mixture is two substances in different states (i.e. a gas and a liquid) that are in the same space and are in contact with each other. When you have a solution that is a gas-gas or a liquid-liquid or possibly a solid-solid solution, the matter of greater amount is the solute. A solution is an example of a homogeneous mixture (can't see the particles with a naked eye). But with heterogeneous mixtures, you can see the particles.

What is the difference between heterogenous and homogenous mixtures?

A heterogenous mixture, you can see the different components. Although, in a homogenous mixture they parts are so evenly mixed you can not see the different components.

What is the difference between a heterogenous mixture and a homogeneous mmixture?

In a heterogenous mixture you can see the different parts that make up the mixture. In a homogenous mixture one substance is dissolved in another and therefore only one substance is visible.

Is nitrogen a element a compound or a solution or heterogeneous mixture?

It is a diatomic element. As such, it would be a solution. It is not a heterogenous mixture because heterogenous means nonuniform. N2 is uniform because it is composed of all the same element in the same proportion. It's a solution.
