A goldfish is able to live in very cold water that is almost freezing up to tropical temperatures. It's a coldwater fish and does not require a heater. Except in very hot climates, tropical fish will require heaters to keep their water at a suitable temperature. Tropicals are also usually more colourful but much more delicate and difficult to look after.

Koi fish can live longer in colder and more shallow water than the goldfish, also in koi fish the colors are a bit brighter.
A koi is a large goldfish that lives in ponds outside whereas a goldfish is smaller and is usually in a bowl or fishtank in the house.

The Koi has Barbells (Whisker like tactile organs around its mouth). The goldfish does not have these. Koi have a longer body with a very broad back specifically for viewing from above. Goldfish seem to be shorter and deeper more for viewing from the side.

the difference may not be noticeable at first but the two main differences are

size: gold fish stop growing either at 12-14" or depending on the size of tank. while Kio do not stop and only require a pond a tank will not hold them they get to 3-4 feet long and require much more in depth care than gold fish.

the last difference is that Kio are illegal in majority of the us states due to the fact that owners get bored with them and release them in to the wild where they uproot plants and breed with the local carp and over all causing massive amounts of destruction. Main for example the punishment is a hefty fine and jail time and trust me no one wants that all because of a fish hopefully this helps

Goldfish and koi were developed from different species of carp; although they can interbreed, their offspring are sterile. Goldfish were domesticated from the Prussian carp (Carassius gibelio), whereas koi are the domesticated version of the common carp (Cyprinus carpio). In general, goldfish tend to be smaller than koi, and have a greater variety of body shapes, and fin and tail configurations. Koi varieties tend to have a common body shape, but have a greater variety of coloration and color patterns. They also have prominent barbels on the lip. Some goldfish varieties, such as the common goldfish and shubunkin have body shapes and coloration that are similar to koi, and can be difficult to tell apart from koi when immature. Freshwater is a general term, meaning the fish live in waters that do not contain salt or has a very low salt level. Tropical refers to a type of Freshwater Fish (betta fish) that live in warm waters, around 80 degrees. There are also coldwater freshwater fish (goldfish) that live in waters around 60 degrees.

The word tropical simply means that something is from the tropics; ie, near the equator. There are two kinds of tropical fish; tropical freshwater and tropical marine. When someone says 'tropical fish' in a pet store, or in the context of an aquarium, they generally mean tropical freshwater. Marine fish are simply fish that come from the ocean, ie, they are Saltwater Fish.

You're getting your terminology confused!

Tropical refers to temperature, the opposite being coldwater and the median being sub-tropical.

Marine refers to salinity, the amount of salt in the water, the opposite being freshwater and the median being brackish.

So you can have a tropical marine fish, or a tropical freshwater fish!

The primary difference is that guppies are tropical fish and goldfish are coldwater fish. Guppies need a more managed environment, in which the temperature is carefully regulated.

Guppies - particularly males - also come in a greater variety of colours than standard goldfish.

The dorsal fins and tails of guppies are also more spectacular, particularly in males.

Freshwater can be either tropical (above 65F) or cold (below 65F) so the only difference between the fish in captivity is whether a heater thermostat is required or not.

"Tropical" simply means the aquarium is kept above 60F. "Marine" simply means the water in the aquarium has had sea salt added to make the water into sea water. Therefore it is possible to have aquaria that are "Tropical", or "Marine", and also "Tropical marine".

Can fish that are tropical live in freshwater?

There are many freshwater tropical fish. In fact most of the tropical fish kept by aquarists are freshwater and they can not survive in either cold water or marine (salt) water. In most cases the marine species are much more difficult to keep and much more expensive to set up for.
