There is little difference in these two words, there meaning tell of an imaginary story using fictional characters which has moral in its telling.

An allegory relies heavily on symbolism, where a character will be the embodiment of a particular virtue or person or group of persons. For example the phrase 'justice measures with her eye bound' would be allegorical as it personifies justice and is therefore a symbol.
