A prokaryote's most defining feature is its lack of membrane-bound organelles, which includes a nucleus. An example of a prokaryote is bacteria.

Protists, on the other hand, are eukaryotes, which does have membrane-bound organelles. It is mostly unicellular, and usually classified as any eukaryote that does not belong in any other categories. An example of a protist is euglena.
