An ordinary war is a conflict between nations or groups over political, territorial, or economic issues. A holy war, on the other hand, is a conflict motivated by religious beliefs or ideology, often with the aim of promoting or defending a particular faith. Holy wars are often considered by those involved to be sanctioned by a higher power or to have a divine purpose.
