The main difference is the amount of carbon. Anthracite is harder and contains more carbon. Bituminous coal is a sedimentary rock and anthracite coal is actually a metamorphic rock that has undergone tremendous pressures, usually from mountain building events.
Bituminous coal was known about and mined as far back as Native American Indians. Bituminous Coal exists in the geological area known as The Pittsburgh Coal Seam-- an area extending from Western Pennsylvania, Western West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. Though mined since the days of Native American Indians, and heavily mined since 1800, it is estimated there is still enough coal in this large seam to last millions of years. It burns easily, stays hot longer than anthracite coal, and burns hot. It was perfect for home heating-- beginning with Indian camp fires.
Bituminous coal is soft and burns hotter and longer. Anthracite coal is harder than Bituminous coal and is not preferred for heating.

Anthracite coal is harder than bituminous coal. Anthracite coal has a relative hardness of 1.3 to 1.4. Bituminous coal has a hardness of less than one.

The protolith of schist is typically shale or slate, which undergoes metamorphism to form schist. The protolith of anthracite coal is primarily bituminous coal, which is subjected to higher temperature and pressure conditions during metamorphism to convert into anthracite coal.
No it is not but bituminous coal is
Anthracite.

Bituminous coal is a soft coal, compared to anthracite coal, a hard coal. Bituminous coal is a long-burning, hot burning source of fuel.
