I think a smirk is when someone is being smart or acting like a know it all.

Example: "I know you want me to kiss you. You just won't admit it to yourself. But I know." He said smirking at me.

And I think a grin is like an almost smile.

Example: "You will be loved!" He sang purposely in a terrible voice, grinning at me.

A grin is a broad smile showing teeth, usually expressing happiness or amusement. A smirk is a smug, self-satisfied smile often used to show sarcastic or conceited amusement. The key difference is the level of sincerity or insincerity conveyed by each expression.
