During inflammation, the body is trying to control and localize an infection. The body sends in macrophages to help break down and consume toxins, such as the proteins that bacteria create. All this activity generates heat, which is why the skin becomes pinker to reddish and warmer to the touch. However, gangrene is the death of tissues. The damage to the tissues (from infection, freezing, lack of glucose) is so severe, the body's defenses cannot repair or contain the damage. Skin begins to turn blackish in color; it is no longer getting a blood supply or nutrients. Gangrene can quickly advance from toe to foot to leg. Gangrene always requires amputation. But inflammation has the chance to heal as the body absorbs the byproducts of the temporary damage. Inflammation does not require amputation, but may need IV antibiotics to help support the body's natural defenses.
