An internship is generally a one year intensive focus on a particular aspect of a job, usually for significantly reduced pay in exchange for the benefit of learning from experts on the job.

A residency is a formal program that may be 3-5 years in length with an intensive focus on preparing the resident to become certified in a particular aspect of a job. Residents also tend to be paid less, but they also take formal classes and must study for a standardized test at the end of their residency.

Internships are common throughout professional careers ranging from medicine to accounting. Residencies are more common in medical professions.

A residency is basically clinical training within a narrow medical specialty. It is very difficult for a physician in the US to practice with nothing more than an internship in today's world. Therefore most physicians specialize.

Is there any internship for an emergency physician?

There is an internship for all physicians in the US. It's required before they can obtain medical license to practice medicine in what ever state they are in. The first year of training after medical school is the internship. It's usually part of a longer residency program for many medical specialties. ER, for example, is 4 year of residency including 1 year of internship. However, a doctor doesn't have to be residency trained to practice medicine as long as he/she has 1 year of internship.
