If it were not late at night, I would give you a better answer, but here are some definitions fromhttp://forecast.weather.gov/glossary.php.IsolatedA National Weather Service convective precipitation descriptor for a 10 percent chance of measurable precipitation (0.01 inch). Isolated is used interchangeably with few.
ScatteredWhen used to describe precipitation (for example: "scattered showers") - Area coverage of convective weather affecting 30 percent to 50 percent of a forecast zone (s).
NumerousA National Weather Service convective precipitation descriptor for a 60 or 70 percent chance of measurable precipitation (0.01 inch).

When I was a forecaster, the terms had a dual meaning - current coverage as well as the amount of an area that would be covered at least at some point during a specific time period. That definition might still exist, but I need to get some sleep so this is all you get. ;-)

Scattered thunderstorms are thunderstorms in the 30-40% chance category. They are generally weak, widespread short thunderstorms that turn on and off due to a storm system moving over the area.
An isolated system is a system that doesn't not interact with its surroundings. No interactions at all. No work, no heat transfer. An adiabatic system is one that does not permit heat transfer between the system and its surroundings. It can do work on the surroundings.

It's not a matter of duration, but a probability of occurrence. Isolated means about a 20% chance, while scattered, I believe, includes probabilities up to 50%.
