In most cases, to launder clothing means to process them with soap and water. Dry cleaning is a process using something else other than water, usually a naptha derivative. When the clothes are cleaned, there is no water involved, hence the name "dry" cleaning. The dry cleaning compound is liquid, but it is not water.
Liquid laundry detergent comes in a liquid form and is pre-diluted, making it easy to pour directly into the washing machine. CAN you? Yes. Will it still be wearable? Maybe not. That's why the label says "Dry clean only". Depending on the material and construction, it is sometimes safe to wash a dry-clean-only sweater as long as you wash it very gently, BY HAND, in cool water. Blot it dry with a towel, and lay it flat on a table. Do not hang it or wring it out; the sweater may be stretched out of shape and ruined. Do this when there are no other options. Really, if the label says "Dry clean", then spend the 3 bucks and have it dry-cleaned.
It is not recommended to dry clean clothes at home as the process involves using special chemicals and equipment that may be hazardous if not handled properly. It is best to take delicate or dry clean-only garments to a professional dry cleaner to ensure they are properly cleaned and preserved.

This expression makes no sense to me. The way that people would see your laundry airing would be if you hung them out on a clothesline; but you wouldn't put your dirty laundry out to dry, that makes no sense, the only laundry out to dry would be what you just washed--which should be reasonably clean.
