Patron saints are specifically designated as protectors or guardians of certain groups of people or places, while Catholic saints are individuals who have been recognized by the Catholic Church for living holy lives. Both are saints but patron saints are "specialists" who have been declared by the Vatican to the the patrons, or protectors, of certain vocations or groups of people. This is much like the medical field where we have doctors and specialists.
