There is a difference between the culinary definition of fruit, vegetable and grain and the botanical definition.

The culinary definition: Fruits and vegetables are simply distinguished on where and how the item is used for food, and depending if it is savoury or sweet. For example a tomato would be considered a vegetable and a rhubarb would be considered a fruit. Grains are simply dried seeds and cereals.

The botanical definition: A fruit is the ripened ovary of a flowering plant, while a vegetable is any edible part of the plant that is not the fruit. Thus a tomato would be a fruit, while a rhubarb would be a vegetable. A grain, is also a type of fruit called caryposis that does not open at maturity.
