A pure metal is found in nature. An alloy is a combination of metals.

Alloys are better because some metals react with air and water yet Alloys dont react as much. This is why car wheels are made of Alloys so that they dont react with air or water.

Alloys are simply a mix of two different metals. After being mixed they have different and better characteristics such as stainless steel. Alloys are a special type of metal.

Pure metals are softer and more malleable, while alloys are harder and less malleable (e.g. stronger). This is because alloys are made of more than one type of metal and thus the different particle sizes of the different metal atoms will prevent the sliding of particles over one another. On the other hand, pure metals are only made of one type of metal atom, and thus they are able to slide over each other easier and thus are softer.

How many solids are in a metal alloy?

Alloy is the term used to identify an ingredient used to "change the characteristic of a base metal" or a metal that has been modified. They almost have to be solids as a liquid would vaporize when the metal is molten. Almost all metals are alloyed unless designated "pure". ie: pure gold 24 carat. Most jewelry 14 to 18 carat (alloyed).

What type of element or compound is gold?

pure gold is a element and is a metal. But it is too soft and thus it is often alloyed with other metals

What's the difference between 22 or 18 carat gold?

The word carat is used to denote the purity of the metal it is used on. Therefore, 18 carat shows that the metal (i.e gold) is 75% pure, while 22 carat shows that it is nearly 92% pure metal, ( 91.67% to be precise). So the difference is 17% in the purity of the metal.
