An absolute date is one determined by finding something with a date on it (a bit of text) or one determined by radiometric dating This tells you how many years ago something actually happened.
A relative date is obtained from stratigraphy For instance you can see pottery styles change as you move to shallower layers in a sequence. The ones higher up must be more recent. Then when you dig somewhere else and find the same pottery in the ground you can say that that layer is the same relative age as the same layer of pottery found at the first site. However while you can form a time sequence using this method you can not pin any one point in the sequence down to an actual number of years ago.
