Renewable and nonrenewable apply to products or materials that either can or cannot be replaced or replenished. Water is an example of a constantly renewed resource. Oil is an example of a nonrenewable resource. Many materials can be recycled in their refined state (aluminum, glass, some plastic). Other products, left to nature, will return to an unrefined state and may be reused in some manner (paper, foods).

Nonrenewable Resources

Nonrenewable resource are those Natural Resources that cannot be replaced once they are used up. Some examples include:

  • oil
  • coal
  • gas
  • uranium

Renewable Resources

Renewable resources are those resources that can be replaced as they are used up. Some examples include:

  • soil
  • air
  • water
  • wood
  • sunlight
