∙ 9y agoBasically a solar calendar counts years, a lunar calendar counts lunations (new moon to new moon) and these do not match. The calendars fall out of synchronisation and adjustments have to be made to bring them back into agreement.
The reason Easter falls on different days is because a lunar calendar is used to calculate its date.

∙ 8y agoSolar calendars, like the Gregorian, the one that goes from January to December, are set up to stay in sync with the solstices and equinoxes. Although the Gregorian calendar is divided into periods called months, its "months" are not in sync with the phases of the moon as the name suggests.
Lunar calendars, like the Hijra, the one used by Muslims that goes from Muharram to Dhu al-Hijjah, consist of months that always begin at the time of the new moon. Similar to how Gregorian years are divided into "months" that don't follow the moon, lunar calendars have years consisting of twelve months each, but those years are not in sync with the seasons. The time it takes for twelve cycles of the lunar phases is between 10 and 11 days less than the time it takes Earth to return to the same solstice or equinox.
Luni-solar calendars, like the Hebrew calendar, the one that begins on Rosh Hashanah and goes from Tishri to Elul (although The Bible says that Nisan, six months after Tishri, is the first month of the year), consists of months that always begin at the time of the new moon, but it also has leap months added every two or three years to keep the calendar within a month of being in sync with the annual cycle. Tishri always begins within a few weeks of the September equinox, and Nisan always begins within a few weeks of the March equinox. A total of seven leap months are added to every 19-year period. There is a luni-solar version of the Hijra in use in some places, but most Muslims are more comfortable basing their observances and celebrations on the traditional calendar.
