What is the difference between worsted wool and pure new wool?

The term 'pure wool' would indicate that the item is made from 100% wool, some of which may be recycled. 'Pure new wool' would indicate that the idem is made from all new wool -- 100%. The difference being 'new'.

Garments are often labeled "pure new wool" or "pure virgin wool" to denote that the yarn used to create them is 100% wool and has never been used before. Wool yarn can often be unraveled from one garment and used to create another garment. Since the yarn contains wool fibers that have undergone some amount of wear and tear in their "previous life," such garments are considered of lower quality than those made with virgin wool.

Worsted is a spinning technique in which the fiber is processed using combs to remove the shorter hairs, then spun in such a way that all the hairs will all be parallel. The opposite is woollen, in which the fiber is processed using cards, leaving in the shorter pieces and preventing the fibers from being parallel. Despite the name, any fiber can be spun worsted or woollen.

In the United States, "worsted" is also one of the standardized weights (thicknesses) of yarn. So it's possible for a yarn to be simultaneously worsted, AND woollen, AND not made of wool at all!
