A dynamo generator and an electric motor are similar in construction, but work in opposite ways to one another, and have reciprocal purposes. Both contain a central shaft with affixed magnet(s) surrounded by a series of wound coils enclosed by an outer casing having two electrical leads, one live and one neutral.

In a dynamo, an outside mechanical force such as the rotation of a cyclist's wheel spins the central shaft and magnets around. The magnetic force pushes and pulls electrons in the outer coils which creates an electric potential between the leads.

In a motor, an electric current is fed to the leads which pushes and pulls electrons through the coils. The coils become negatively charged then positively charged, cycling back and forth to the opposing and attracting magnets. This drives the shaft in a circle to power an external mechanical device.

Motor . . . Put electrical energy in, get mechanical energy out (the shaft spins).

Generator . . . Put mechanical energy in (spin the shaft), get electrical energy out.
Same machine can be used both as a generator and motor!!

the difference is given electrical energy a motor converts it into mechanical energy...for example the fan contains a motor which rotates when you switch it on..i.e.,when you are supplying electrical energy...on the other hand a generator converts mechanical energy into electrical energy..for example the dynamo in a cycle lights up the bulb when you are pedaling..

The basic difference between an electrical generator & electrical motor is the conversion of energy.

Principally, in case of electrical generator the mechanical energy (steam, water, wind) is converted into electrical energy whereas in case of electrical motor the electrical energy is converted into mechanical energy.

Electrical generators are used for generating electrical power while electrical motors are used to consume electrical energy to do some mechancial work eg. pumping water, moving elevators etc.

In generators though we provide mechanical energy we need to energize the field

and of course we've self excited generator.

where as in motors (AC) we provide suppy to the stator itself and suppy will be induced in rotors to get rotation

in DC stator and rotor is connected either in series or shunt. collectively we provide suppy to it

Motors change electrical power to mechanical power.

Permanent magnet dc motors and generators can usually work either way.

In simplest terms -

(staying away from discussing residual magnetism & permanent magnets)

(1) If mechanical power turns the shaft, you will generate electricity from the wires. This is called generator action.

(2) If you put electricity into the wires, you will get mechanical power (rotation) from the shaft. This is called motor action.

The same (motor) can often be used either way. Hope that clears it up a bit.
