It was designed to be 1,000,000 meters (10,000 km) when the meter was defined.

The more precise figure is 1,001,965 meters.

You can also approximate it by

The N pole is 90° latitude

1° latitude = 60 minutes = 60 nautical miles

1 nautical mile = 1852 meters

90 x 60 x 1852 = 1,000,800 meters

I am thankful for this answer but it has a typographical error. The first line should say 10,000,000 m, which is indeed 10,000 km. The answer to the calculation in the last line is 10,000,800 meters instead of the number shown there.

What is the distance on the earth's surface as measured by miles north or south from the equator to the pole?

Approximately 10,014 km (6258.75 miles). The earth isn't a perfect sphere so the distance from the south pole to the equator is slightly different to the distance from the north pole to the equator. The distance from the north pole to the equator is 10,000 km (6250 miles). The reason it's such a round number is because a metre was originally defined as exactly 1 10,000,000th of the distance from the north pole to the equator.

What is distance in degree north and south of the equator?

That's latitude. The distance to the north or south pole from the equator is 90° Therefore, the distance from the north pole to the south pole, in degrees, is 180°. The distance in degrees to a certain location from the equator is referred to as the latitude. For instance, I am at about 49° latitude, or at a 49° angle from the equator if you were positioned at the center of the earth. Each degree of latitude is about 69 miles (111 km).
