The legal drinking age is regulated by the "Licensing Act 2003".
In stores, or generally in public: it is illegal for minors under the age of 18 to buy or consume alcoholic drinks. But in bars or restaurants: it is legal for 16 year old to consume beer, wine or cider with a meal if it is ordered by a person over the age of 18 (exeption: Scottland, where a person aged 16 is allready concidered as a adult). The sale of liquer chocolate or food products containing alcohol is illegal for a person under the age of 16. The law also regulates, that alcohol may not be given to a person under the age of 5 in a private home/residence.
18 is the legal drinking age in England, however there is talk of raising it to 21.
Under-age drinking - is currently defined in UK law as the '...consumption of alcohol by a person below the legal age of 18 years...'
No - the age limit here in the UK is 18 - yet there are more cases of under-age drinking each year. The solution to under-age drinking - is to impost heavier penalties on those who supply kids with alcohol. It is now an arrestable offence in the UK "...to buy or attempt to buy alcohol for consumption by any one under 18..." - Anyone - and this includes parents who knowingly gives alcohol to an under-age person - can be fined and/or imprisoned.
In the UK, the legal drinking age is 18. However, the law permits individuals aged 16 or 17 to consume beer, wine, or cider with a meal if purchased by an adult. In terms of bringing alcohol on a plane, the legal drinking age of the country of arrival typically applies. Therefore, a 16-year-old can bring alcohol on a plane to the UK as long as they are not planning to consume it until they are of legal drinking age.
