The span of the movement was calculated by Eiffel's team before buiding it, and the move at the very top described an oval of only a few centimeters (the oval could fit inside your dinner plate). That should be even less today as some metal beams most subject to the expansion had been replaced with a different metal to limit that phenomenon and the stress it could put on the structure.
