Short words make the writing move faster. Short sentences make it move faster, too. Action scenes need to move quickly.

When you have a long sentence, with many long words and perhaps unfamiliar phrases or idioms, the reader slows down to make sure he or she is not missing anything, and this slows down the action.

Using short sentences during action scenes can create a sense of urgency and tension, propelling the narrative forward and engaging the reader in the fast-paced events. Short sentences help to convey a quick rhythm and mimic the pace of the action itself, making the reader feel as if they are experiencing the events in real time.
