In the UK it can be known as the crust.

I believe the official term is the "heel" of the loaf.

When I was growing up we called it the hupfermumber.

This is one that me and my partner always argue about! I've grown up knowing this as a knobby and he calls it the topper.

Those are called the heels. The entire loaf is enclosed in a crust; it's part of the baking process. When you slice the loaf, you end up with those two pieces. It is good to leave them in place, because they protect the softer, inner slices of bread and allow them to stay soft.

I am truly unsure what this is. Maybe crust? Sorry.

Yes, it is crust although I bet people in different parts of different countries have all sorts of different words for it as well.

In the US it is referred to as the heal.

The heel of the bread is then end of a loaf of bread. Or you could say that the crust is the end of a loaf of bread depending on how you interpret it.

The end of a loaf of bread is still bread and you can use it for anything you would use the rest of the loaf for. The only difference is that it has more crust.
