"Gathering Blue" is a story about a girl named Kira who has a twisted leg and lives in a society where people who cannot work die. She is cared for by her mother but when her mother dies Kira must appear before the Council of Guardians, who spare her life once she shows them that she can weave and embroider. She is given the job of repairing the robes for the Singer, who's job is only to sing and must bring a song once a year. Kira discovers she must dye her own thread and learns all the plants to use for all colors but blue. As time goes on she realizes that the people with gifts are prisoners and some are even made to wear chains.
In the ending of "Gathering Blue," Kira decides to stay in the village and use her skills to help rebuild and create a better future for her community. She also discovers the truth about the mysterious blue robe and gains a sense of purpose and belonging. The novel concludes with a message of hope and resilience in the face of adversity.
In the ending of "Gathering Blue," Christopher kills Kira when Kira escapes to go to his village. Then, Jamison goes out to find her and rapes her. After that, Matt gets struck by lightning. THE END.
The climax is when Matt brings an old blind man with him to hide and Kira realizes that he is her father. She also realizes that Jamison is the one that blinded him and attacked him.
There isn't really a sequel, but both Gathering Blue and the Messenger are companion books to The Giver.
