An example of an external conflict is the one between Quirrel/Voldemort and Harry Potter during the last challenge. While there is arguably much more internal conflict going into the decisions Harry makes during that time, Quirrel's face blistering (which results in his death) due to Harry's touch represents a very external conflict.

The external conflict in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is that Lord Voldemort, aided by Professor Quirrell, is trying to steal the philosopher's stone. If Voldemort manages to steal the stone, he can use it to return to power and continue trying to over throw the wizarding world. Harry Potter, along with his friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, must save the stone and prevent Voldemort's return.
