Education in the US is funded by the government, the students (and their families), and by (usually non-profit) organizations.

All of the above sources support education by giving money directly to schools, or by financially helping specific students the organization feels have exceptional academic merit or financial need.

If you are a student looking to fund your education, FAFSA.ed.gov is a good start (that's where you apply for federal government financial aid) and fastweb.com is a good place to go next (it's a database that matches you with private scholarships you can apply for based on how you answer questions about yourself, your academic plans, etc).

PS: "Financial Aid" doesn't always mean free money. If it is truly free (like a grant or scholarship) you still have to complete the education it was to fund, or you may be required to pay the money back. "Financial Aid" can also mean student loans (both from the government and from private sources) as well as work-study (where you work at school to help pay for your education).

Another Answer:

Education can be funded by many means. Some are:

  • Your parents can pay for college
  • You can take up part time jobs to pay for your college
  • You can approach a bank and get an education loan
