Chromatophores being the general term, a squid uses cells called melanophores and erythrophores mainly to communicate with each other. An example of this is the Humbolt Squid which uses flashes of red and white to communicate.

The funnel of a squid is used for jet propulsion, in which case the squid shoots out a stream of fast-moving water. The squid moves the opposite way the funnel is faced. The funnel can be moved in different directions allowing the squid to move different directions. The funnel is also used to expel wastes and ink.
