It seems that armpit hair as well as pubic hair would increase perspiration in the area, holding the smell close so the musky odor will attract the opposite sex. Humans historically have smelled very strong, the scent even acting as a defense against predators. Once we walked upright, our noses were higher than the height of sexual organs thus the need to move the smell higher. This accompanies the theory that the reason humans are the only mammals whose females retain swolen breasts even when not lactating is because the breast cleavage simulates the appearance of female sexual organs as viewed when walking on all fours.
