Why is residual volume important?

Residual Volume (rv) is important because it prevents the lungs from collapsing. It also prevents the inside surfaces of the lungs touching, thus creating friction. It also prevents the inner surfaces of the lungs sticking together. Another reason why we have a residual volume is that gaseous exchange is continuously occurring so after we have expelled as much air as possible (expiratory reserve volume) gaseous exchange is still occurring. Residual volume can be shown in this equation: residual volume = inspiratory reserve volume - tidal volume - expiratory reserve volume for an average person residual volume will be around 1 to 1.5 litres. What do increased residual volume and decreased vital capacity indicate?

The increased residual volume and decreased vital capacity indicates difficulty in breathing. There are many conditions that can make the breathing capacity to reduce.

What does total lung capacity equals?

Total lung volume equals Vital Capacity + Residual Volume.

What is meant by residual volume with reference of breathing?

Exhalation is a passive action that results from elastic recoil and changes in air pressure. When this happens naturally a portion of air remains within the lungs- residual volume. However when exhalation is forced, that is conscious efforts to expel as much air as possible, many of the residual volume can be forced out of the lungs.
