The biceps brachii is the muscle on the front of your upper arm. Its purpose is to pull bend your arm at the elbow (flexion).

It is one of an antagonistic pair of muscles. The other muscle is the triceps brachii on the back of the upper arm. It straightens (extends) your arm at the elbow.
The biceps are used to flex the lower arm up to the upper arm. They also allow the wrists to suppinate.
It helps in flexioning the forearm against the arm

(Biceps brachii-arms)

generally the biceps is thought of as a flexor, but it is actually the coracobrachiallis which pushes the bicep muscle upwards making it look big, although there is contraction of the biceps

biceps alone is a moderatly weak flexor but a strong supinator - which is the process of twisting arm until your thumb sticks outwards.

There is also a biceps femoris, as part of the hamstring muscle group, being a flexor muscle of the knee and hip (thigh) and plays a dominant role during walking or running.

coracobrachialis represents the degenerated medialcompartmentof the arm. the muscle lies just medial to the short head of biceps. The bulge of the biceps is primarily due to the biceps itself. Brachialis muscle makes it appear more bulky.

Is a bicep a type of arm muscle?

Bicep translates from latin to mean "two heads" and this describes the most notable feature of the muscle. The biceps brachi is one of the muscle in the arm that acts on the elbow joint to suppinate (primary function) and to flex (secondary function) the forearm. There is however another biceps muscle in the body, this is why the one in the arm is given the full name "biceps brachi" to deistinguish it from the "biceps femoris". This muscle is again two headed but this time is is present on the femur, the bone in the thigh. It is one of the three muscles that forms the hamstring and as such it is involed in the flexion of the knee joint.

What function do th triceps serve?

The primary function ofthe biceps brachi is suppination of the forarm, only when the forearm is suppinated does the biceps brachi assist brachialis in flexion of the elbow. The Triceps brachi is the only significant extensor of the elbow joint.
