The sperm inside of male semen may cause pregnancy when ejaculated inside a fertile female around the time of ovulation (opposite in the month from the period). That is one reason to use protection, so the woman won't get pregnant. Disease is another possibility. If the man has a STD, the woman could get it from the man's semen.

A sperm cell in the womb may find the egg cell and fertilize it. That would start the process of pregnancy. The egg provides half the genetic material needed, and the sperm provides the other half.
