The shift key allows the user to type an uppercase letter - a capital. When there are two symbols on a key, the shift key allows the user to type the uppoermost character. In combination with other keys, such as the alt key, or the control key, it allows the user to perfom shortcuts for menuitems.

The shift key (a bold up arrow) is responsible for, when being held down, writing capital letters when hitting a second key, for example 'H', 'E' and 'X'. Another thing it can be used for is making number keys symbols (6 to ^, 2 to ", 5 to %), or symbols not requiring shift to change into different ones when using it (. to >, = to +, ' to @). Pressing it five times without doing anything else causes StickyKeys to activate, which enables you to use that, Ctrl, Alt and the windows logo key by pressing one key at a time.
