ammonium ion, which is the end product of amino acid degradation, is toxic if allowed to accumulate. the urea cycle is a pathway that detoxifies the ammonium ions by converting it to urea - which is then transported to the kidneys to form urine... the function is to remove nitrogen waste from the body and avoid toxicity

Urea cycle is actually more important than one thinks. The urea cycle is commonly found in the mitochondria system. This cycle if vital to some living organism's. Without it, some will go extinct.

The urea cycle uses 2 ammonia and 1 carbon dioxide. Ornitine is converted to urea in this process. Ammonia is toxic and that is why the urea cycle exists - to consume them.
