The main idea in J. D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye is that of troubled youth and trying to overcome a great loss. Through out this story, Holden attempts to deal with the death of his younger brother Allie. He sees Allie as a pure child untainted by the evils of the world and Holden is unable to accept the loss of such a soul. Holden's story is about the trials of a young boy who is violently pushed into the world of adulthood.
The theme of the ducks in The Catcher in the Rye symbolizes Holden's concern about change, loss, and the uncertainty of the future. The ducks represent Holden's own feelings of displacement and his search for a place in the world where he belongs. Throughout the novel, the ducks serve as a metaphor for Holden's own journey of self-discovery and his longing for stability in a world that seems constantly changing.
The theme about the ducks is the unknown since no one really knows where they go, just like how we don't know where life will take us.
