There is a world underground. The lights are flickering and the people are slowly running out of food. The only problem is they do not know they are underground. A girl and a boy find instuctions on how to get out. They leave a message and get to the crust of the earth.
The mood of City of Ember is generally dark, mysterious, and foreboding due to the deteriorating conditions of the city and the impending danger it faces. There is an atmosphere of tension and hopelessness as the characters struggle to uncover the truth and find a way out of their deteriorating world.
The genre of the city of Ember is definatly Science Fiction. (it says so on the back of the book):)
